Surf Nation
By Alex Wade - December 18, 2009
I've been suffering a bit lately from an unusual double whammy - cervical myelopathy (a serious and degenerative spinal condition) and Lyme disease. The former is the more worrying. I was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago and told that to go surfing was to risk paralysis. No wave is that good!
However, I had a op yesterday which will hopefully see me back in the water, maybe within six months. I am now bionic with a titanium cage where a disc once was in my neck. Next up, plenty of rehab and vanquishing Lyme. Then it'll be some warm waves for the summer - Barbados, I reckon.
I update www.surfnation.co.uk with what's going down and will check in here too. The upside is that I now a lot more writing time and am actually cracking on with longer prose rather than journalism for once. Every cloud, even a myelopathic Lyme-drenched one, and all that...
Vaya con dios.
