Things have been happening in this last week before my release. The
fall books are coming out from all the publishing houses right now. It
is an exciting time for readers, but a little scary for authors; it is
so easy to get lost in the shuffle.
I have been fortunate enough to have KATERINA’S WISH appear on FOUR wonderful lists in the last few weeks!
First, KIRKUS REVIEWS was kind enough to choose it as one of their
TOP TEN MIDDLE-GRADE BOOKS FOR AUGUST! Previous to selecting my book for this list, Kirkus gave it a starred review and had this to say:
Take one maybe-magical carp and three sisters who believe in wishes, stir them together with an evil shopkeeper and add a dash of romance, and you have one dandy first novel.
Weaving rich details of life in a mining town at the turn of the 20th century with the pacing of a good old-fashioned historical romance and conveying it all in Katerina’s heartfelt voice, Mobley has constructed a world where one determined teenager with brains for business, the bravery to stand up for herself and the ability to find love help make dreams come true.
Top-notch.
KATERINA’S WISH was also highlighted in the AUTUMN 2012 KIDS’ INDIE NEXT LIST, with this fine review from a fine bookstore in Durango, Colorado:
“Life in a turn-of-the-century Colorado coal town means relentless work and little reward for 13-year-old Katerina and her immigrant family. Reminded of a folktale about a wish-granting fish, Trina casts a few wishes of her own when she sees a carp in a nearby pond. New hair ribbons and a favorite dessert appear, so does she dare wish for the impossible? A farm? A brighter future? Trina discovers that wishes can come true with a little magic and a whole lot of moxie. I’m wishing for a sequel to this absolutely wonderful debut novel!” —Julie Shimada, Maria’s Bookshop, Durango, CO
Third, BookBrowse also featured KATERINA’S WISH on their list of 12 NOT TO MISS BOOKS PUBLISHING SOON!
And if that isn’t enough, the NERDY BOOK CLUB included it on a list of 10 mIddle-grade books that reflect the immigrant experience.
I feel very lucky to be getting so much attention from these organizations, and wish I could give a big old fuzzy hug to everyone who loved my book enough to include it on their lists.
